OH MY! THE LION KING RETURNS

Oh my! I really enjoyed Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King—I'd say it's "Certified Fresh." And a warning: spoilers ahead! But hey, it's been like over 20 years, right. If you haven't seen it, that's not my problem.

So something I really appreciate: everyone associated with the remake knew their work was going to be compared to the original; nevertheless, they took the risk of producing the film anyway. Yes, financially, the movie is a success, but as foreseen, there is criticism of the voices, lack of emotion, and that it's not technically "live-action." (Fun fact: Director Jon Favreau snuck in one real shot—did you catch it?)

Like Simba returning to Pride Rock, Jon Favreau handled the opposition and led a movement that will always mean something to him, and the millions of viewers whisked back to their childhood—many reliving the story with their children. That is extraordinary. Their courage against the opposition allowed us to fall in love with the characters once again. And more importantly, be reminded of the parallels between The Lion King script and Scripture.

For you, thinking about back to school might feel like an unwanted homecoming to Pride Rock. You've adopted Hakuna Matata—no worries—all summer and soon reality awaits you. You've been unshackled, while at the same time, attached to your "people." And now, though you'd like to avoid it, acceptance and performance are beckoning. That means choosing specific "in" clothing, selecting advantageous classes, and elevating your game in sports. For others of you, it's the reminder that you live on the "wrong" side of town, etc. Whatever it may be, back to school is your Pride Rock to reclaim.

But just like Simba, God is already providing for your future—and he's circled you with friends willing to go into battle with you. Now what matters is how you will choose to approach the new school year.

Check out the following Scripture and journal the Talk It Over questions. Doing so will help prepare you for what's next in ways Zazu would have appreciated as a lion tamer.

SCRIPTURE

1 Peter 2:9-10 The Passion Translation
But you are God's chosen treasure—priests who are kings, a spiritual "nation" set apart as God's devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvelous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world. For at one time you were not God's people, but now you are. At one time you knew nothing of God's mercy, because you hadn't received it yet, but now you are drenched with it!

TALK IT OVER

  1. Before you Google it, write down how you would define "identity."
  2. Okay, so go Goole it. Now, in your own words, explain identity.
  3. We know our identity is important; write down why it's important to you.
  4. Before you go, write down 3 things God says about who you are (I.e., a child of his).

End in prayer, asking God to help you approach the school year confident in your God-given identity.
